Overview
This project focused on designing a mobile-first ELD (Electronic Logging Device) application for U.S. truck drivers to help them stay compliant with FMCSA regulations while minimizing distraction and cognitive load on the road. The core challenge was balancing strict regulatory requirements (HOS tracking, duty status changes, vehicle selection, Bluetooth ELD pairing) with the realities of a trucker’s environment—long hours, frequent status changes, low-light usage, and the need for instant clarity. The product had to be reliable, readable at a glance, and operable with minimal interaction.
Role and Impact
As the Product Designer, I worked on UX flows, interaction design, and visual system decisions across key journeys: login, Bluetooth ELD connection, vehicle selection, driving status tracking, and duty-status changes. I introduced color-coded driving states (green for driving, orange for break, dark modes for night use) to provide immediate visual feedback, reduced multi-step actions into single-tap flows for status changes, and designed a clean hierarchy for timers, limits, and cycle information. The result was an interface that helps drivers understand compliance status instantly, reduces errors during logging, and supports safer, faster decision-making—demonstrating how thoughtful UX can turn complex regulatory software into a practical, everyday tool.
